Tropical Storm Lee drenches the South

Ugly wet basement

Labor Day Weekend 2011 turned into a cool and wet holiday for most of the Southeast.  Tropical Storm Lee, combined with a cold front, brought excessive rains to most of Alabama, Georgia and now Tennessee, as the storm moves inland. Many areas received as much as ten inches of rain and flash flood warnings remain in effect for many cities.

AFS offers the following tips to help you protect your home:

  • Keep an eye on your gutters and downspouts.  Make sure that they aren’t overflowing excessively and that they’re pointed to direct water at least several feet away from your home.
  • Watch for excessive pooling of water near your home’s foundation.  Your home should ideally be built upon a crown of land that naturally directs water flow away from your home. However, improper land grading or even landscaping can actually direct water towards your home…increasing the potential for it to seep into your basement or crawlspace.
  • Check your basement or crawlspace for signs of leaks or running water.  As rain around the area continues, monitor your basement or crawlspace for running water or standing water.
