The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America declares each May as National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month! During the month of May, allergies and asthma tend to be at its peak due to the amount of pollen in the air among other factors during the season.
Studies have shown that 1 in every 5 Americans are living with asthma and allergies. Though there is no cure for asthma and allergies, there are preventable measures you can take to reduce your symptoms. One measure you can take is finding the culprit of your allergies. It has been proven that the number one allergen that people with asthma and allergies react to are…….dust mite droppings!
Dust mite droppings are tiny and float in the air (EVERYWHERE), where they can be breathed in and aggravate allergies and asthma. Dust mites live in your bedding, your carpet, and your furniture. Dust mites and their waste products are one of the most common causes of year-round allergy and asthma.
Fact: About 20 million Americans have dust mite allergies.
What do you Dust mites love? Crawl spaces!
Crawl spaces and basements are constantly humid, especially if they’re not encapsulated, attracting dust mites and their waste. Because the earth is damp, the damp soils and the water vapor move upward into the house allowing dust mites to migrate and reproduce daily eggs.
This lasting water or moisture can eventually develop into mold or fungus. Due to the moisture, wet wood inside the crawl space attract termites. Besides irritating people with asthma and mold allergies, studies show that prolonged exposure to mold can actually cause asthma!
Encapsulating your crawl space or basement will seal off the earth and air leaks to the outside and eventually improve your health! Adding a dehumidifier to your crawl space of basement will eliminate the humidity in the room and eventually get rid of dust mites.
This month we challenge you to educate your family, friends, co-workers and even yourself about triggers that can cause allergies and asthma.
Will you take the challenge?
