AFS Foundation & Waterproofing Specialists Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity

The AFS Foundation & Waterproofing Specialists (AFS) team is getting their hands dirty with Habitat for Humanity. As part of the companywide Build Together 2023 initiative, AFS employees assisted in home builds in their local communities.

Groundworks®, the parent company of AFS, donated $100,000 to Habitat for Humanity International to support long-term stability through safe and affordable housing. The partnership is part of the Goodworks by Groundworks program that encourages employees to volunteer. 4,500 employees across the country will have the opportunity to volunteer in over 56 communities this year.

Chattanooga

Team members in Chattanooga kicked off the first of six builds for AFS on September 30 where they partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga Area to volunteer in the ReStore. Activities included painting interior doors for three homes and props for an upcoming fundraiser. ReStores accept donated items from the community, sell them, and use the profits to help support home builds for local families in need.

Habitat noted that the AFS team accomplished much more than expected because they were able to split up and work on several different tasks at the same time. “We appreciate their help and look forward to welcoming them back,” said Trish King, Construction Office Manager at HFH of Greater Chattanooga Area.

Knoxville

The Knoxville team had seven employees working together to build a home in Jefferson County for a deserving local family. AFS partnered with Knoxville Habitat for Humanity to add the finishing touches on a brand-new home.

This was the last day that volunteers would be coming to the site, and as a result, the homeowner was there to thank the volunteers personally for their assistance on her new home.

Nashville

On October 10, employees in Nashville teamed up with Rutherford County Area Habitat for Humanity to assist at home builds for three deserving families. Employees split their time between three homes on the same block, fixing the landscaping, applying stucco, and cleaning up the yard.

As part of the Habitat program, the homeowners must contribute a certain number of hours to working on their home. One homeowner, Lisa, is working towards owning her first home. She is extremely grateful for the volunteers, as this home will allow her children and grandchildren to come and stay with her,

The volunteer coordinators at Rutherford County Area Habitat for Humanity said that they had “such a great time with the AFS crew” and are hoping they return to volunteer in the future.

Auburn and Birmingham

The Auburn and Birmingham teams joined forces to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham. 26 employees from the combined offices spent an entire day cutting and installing wood framing at three different Habitat for Humanity homes.

Their efforts were featured on WIAT (CBS) Birmingham.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham thanked AFS for their time, as volunteers are essential in providing deserving community members a new home.

Mobile

The Mobile office closed out AFS’s builds by partnering with Southwest Alabama Habitat for Humanity. On November 9, employees spent the day at the organization’s ReStore in Mobile.

ReStores accept donated items from the community, sell them, and use the profits to help support home builds for local families in need. AFS employees moved and assembled furniture and helped apply a fresh coat of paint to the store.

Southwest Alabama Habitat for Humanity was grateful for AFS employees and their commitment to making the community a better place.
