Crawl Space Repair Job in Huntsville, Alabama
Water in a crawl space causes all kinds of problems for a home such as mold growth or bouncy floors. This was the concern of one homeowner in Hunstville who called on AFS to protect their crawl space from moisture.
One of our Certified Field Inspectors, Dustin Loeb, went out to inspect the property. He found groundwater collecting below the home and noticed general signs of moisture throughout the crawl space. Based on his findings, the installation crew placed drainage inside the crawl space to control the flow of groundwater and installed a 3,000 square foot vapor barrier to block outdoor moisture.

Before Crawl Space Repair:
Moisture in the Crawl Space
As you can see in the image, the crawl space had an ineffective vapor barrier loosely sitting on the floor. There was no protection from moisture along the walls. Since this vapor barrier wasn’t providing much attention, there was a high amount of moisture in the crawl space—creating a damp and uncomfortable area.
Crawl Space Drainage Problem
This image makes it clear that the crawl space had a lack of drainage. As a result, it was easy for groundwater to collect under the dirt floor of the crawl space (especially after a storm) and contribute to the damp environment below the home.
After Crawl Space Repair:
Crawl Space Drainage
First and foremost, our installation crew lined the crawl space with effective drainage. In the image, you can see how the drainage travels along the perimeter of the crawl space. This is where groundwater most often gets into the crawl space, so adding drainage here will help control the flow of groundwater away from the crawl space.
Sump Pump
Alongside the drainage system, our team also installed a sump pump for even more protection against groundwater. Looking at the image, you can see it placed in the corner of the crawl space. This area was chosen because it’s the lowest part of this particular crawl space. Groundwater naturally flows toward the lowest point where it will be captured and removed by the pump.
Vapor Barrier
Once the drainage system and sump pump were in place, our team installed a 3,000 square foot vapor barrier. With 120-mil thickness, the vapor barrier protects the crawl space from humid air and outdoor moisture. You can also see how the vapor barrier makes the crawl space look brighter and more inviting than before.

I was standing at the crossroads of whether to sell my home/property or have foundation issues addressed. An AFS truck passed my house one day so I decided to give them a call for an inspection and quote. Joe Kashner, Project Manager, arrived and did the inspection. Thankfully, it was found that I had termites, which I immediately had treated. He went over the issues, which were much more than I anticipated, and then the quote. It still left me standing at the crossroads on what to do. However, after much thought and discussion and questions answered, Joe worked with me, and I made a decision I wanted to keep my home. An AFS crew showed up on a Monday for a week long project that included joist work (adding and replacement), partial girder replacement, some sealplate replacement, and then encapsulation (due to water and moisture problems). The crew – Taylor Fox, David Ennis, Patrick Trotter, and Clay Graham (who came on the last day to assist with completion) were nothing short of amazing. Such hardworking professionals with great work ethic that kept me updated throughout the project with pics. I just can't say enough good. What a pleasure it was to have them around. Their workmanship looks amazing! I am so thankful for that truck passing my house that one day that lead me to call AFS. I know they had my best interest at heart, and for that, I am grateful. I was blessed with the best!

Shout at to the entire crew at AFS. From my inspector, Eric Knowlton, through the Production Manager, James Such, to my hands own crew lead by foreman Nikoli Elrod and his stud group of co-foreman and installers including: Christian Parrish, Edgar Perez and Clayton Cox. I just can't say enough good things about this project and the team that installed it. Our home had experienced differential settlement along the left rear corner, needed extensive stabilization of its floor framing, and had tons of both water and vapor reaping havoc in my crawlspace. The AFS team landed like the marines and just took care of business. They called every day before heading out, as well as activating an app that let me track their progress like a pizza delivery — just not used to that with home construction projects. They showed up on time and worked late and completed our projects ahead of schedule And most importantly, they did all of this while remaining amazingly kind and respectful. These are the sort of folks you want to work around your home. Thanks again to Nikoli and crew for a phenomenal job at our home!
